The Global Ivory Trade Uncovered - DataV Introductory Tutorial on Data Visualization

Preface

Since reading the two tutorials on the use of DataV data by the god of wood sauce, I am also very itchy to use DataV artifacts to create a data visualization work. After an afternoon of struggle, I successfully promoted from a small white user to a novice user, the experience (jiao) experience (xun) dare not hide, specially written to share with you. This novice tutorial only try static data; api, database, sql and other advanced data application skills can refer to the previous articles of the wooden sauce gentleman, please poke the link: "DataV first practical sharing: teach you to create a car in 30 minutes big screen ‘, ’big data food - looking for the map on the delicious

As a former NGO practitioner who has carried out aid missions in many African countries, I love the scenery of the African grasslands; the scene of elephants and giraffes walking slowly under the baobab trees in twos and threes at sunset is the deepest impression Africa has left on me. I can't understand why someone would slaughter these beautiful animals for the sake of making some flashy decorations.

“No sale, no kill”, the public service announcement of boycotting wildlife products is very popular and plays a big role in protecting wildlife. I have become a practitioner of the Internet industry, I have also been very curious about whether I can pass the data on the Internet, pick up the dark secrets of wildlife poaching, smuggling and consumption! A simple search, found that the Internet has a lot of public disclosure of data wildlife protection organizations, especially on the illegal trade of ivory data is the most adequate. so, focus on the illegal trade of ivory as a breakthrough!

Step 1: Start by setting a few small, achievable goals! The goals are in front of you, so you can work without panic!

Goal 1: The final data visualization work can be shared through the Internet, the more sharing, the more value. After some research, DataV is able to generate web links for sharing!

Objective 2: Make an eye-catching global ivory smuggling roadmap, picking up on who is killing elephants and who is consuming ivory.

Goal 3: Make a map-based country-specific heat map to see which places have the most elephants.

Objective 4: Analyze the illegal ivory trade trends in recent years.

Setp2: Finding Illegal Ivory Trade Data

There are many internet sources of data on illegal ivory trade, www.savetheelephants.org, www.worldwildlife.org, https://cites.org/eng/prog/mike/index.php , all of which are rich databases. According to the objectives of STEP1, the following types of data were collected and organized:

    1. Selected ivory smuggling pathways (international ivory smuggling cases of more than 500 kilograms seized during 2009-2011)

Data source: CITES MIKE Program (Chinese statistics only include mainland China)

2、Partial Elephant Conservation Volume Country Data

Data source: “Continent-wide survey reveals massive decline in African savannah elephants”, 2016

    3、Various comprehensive statistics

Seizure statistics of ivory smuggling cases from 2009 to 2013

step3: Select DataV component, import data

First of all, open the AliCloud website and enter the DataV web version, you can purchase it!

If you have not purchased, hurry up 3 dollars to buy, it is said that the price will increase soon!

If not purchased, hurry up 3 dollars to buy, it is said that the price will go up soon!

If you haven't purchased it, hurry up and buy it for 3 dollars, the price is rumored to be going up soon!

After logging in to DataV, enter the management console, select “New” to create a new project:

After entering the new project, found a lot of high templates, double 11, Tmall all have! But we want to take the route of personalization, decisively choose a blank template!

Into the new template, a variety of tools to see first, the upper left column is a variety of chart components, the right panel to configure the component data and appearance of the style, the upper right corner of the “Share” button can be generated to publicly share the page.

According to the plan of step1, to do a visualization of the ivory smuggling path, first drag a “3d flat world map” component in:

After dragging in the map component, you can move and zoom the component, and on the right side is the map component settings panel, which allows you to customize various effects.

In order to create the ivory smuggling road map, you need to add a flying line component on the map:

After adding, you can see the cool flying line flying around on the map, but the geographic coordinates are not what we want, change!

Click on the Flying Line component on the right panel to configure it:

At this point, the problem comes, the smuggling route data we collected is only for the country, there is no geographic coordinates needed for the fly line, it needs to be converted to geographic coordinates. So, according to each country's capital or center point, convert it to the format needed for the DataV map component:

The converted data is pasted into the fly-by-wire component settings panel to see how it works:

The result is perfect, clearly showing the path of illegal ivory trade and smuggling! Just look at this route densely fly to China a little guilty ah! Generally speaking, the African continent leads to Asia, with Qatar, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia as important transit points for criminals! And our country is clearly the largest end-consumer market.

Next, add the country-specific conservation volume data for the elephants, and the component “bar chart” should fit perfectly. As with the fly-by-wire component, the country-specific geographic data should be entered, and here the value can be the number of elephants we have collected. After setting up the bar chart data, let's take a look at the preliminary results:

Looking at the fruits of our labor, we find that countries with rampant ivory smuggling activities also have relatively less elephant conservation, is there a correlation? This is left to the reader to explore!

Next, continue to use other data to add components, first draw a graph of changes in smuggling cases. In the right side of the data panel to modify the default configuration, after messing around, look at the effect:

Ivory smuggling cases over the years found to be high, the situation is worrisome ah!

Then use the next ivory smuggling method statistics:

Found that shipping is the main way criminals smuggling, black and white on the high seas, the high incidence of evil breeding ground!

Finally, let's take a look at some positive data, the statistics of countries' donations to the African Elephant Fund:

Our country ranks third in the amount of donations, after the Netherlands and Germany.

Look at the effect of combining all the components:

Now that all the data is in DataV, all that's left to do is to add explanatory text and beautify the charts!

step4: Chart beautification

One of the major advantages of DataV is the rich customization options provided by each component. Take the map component as an example, the fill color and border line of each country can be customized.

Map component, for example, in order to highlight the ivory smuggling crime-ridden countries, these countries marked in red; need to personalize the map component through the appearance of the two settings, the data set the color of the country.

    Appearance setting options:

Data setting options:

Here you need to pay attention to, country id is 3 letters, some online country code is 2 letters, don't fall into the pit!

After some hard tuning, look at the map fly line effect! It's awesome, isn't it!

The appearance of other components is also adjusted in the same way, such as pie chart coloring:

Let's see how it turned out:

Doesn't it match the theme better than the native one!

Finally, I'm going to give you the final result! Interactive version poke here!

step5: share it online

After all the hard work, you want more people to read your data visualization work, DataV's sharing function can generate a URL with one click, which is very convenient.

Afterword

With a magic tool like DataV, public welfare causes like wildlife protection can also benefit from it. Here we launch a public service communication campaign to protect wild elephants, if you see this article, you are welcome to share the link to this work with others, no sale, no killing!
